Based on extensive archival research not only in Spain but in other European archives, this is an admirable study persuasively argued. The book is thoroughly documented with an ample bibliography, an extensive index, four maps, eight figures, six genealogical tables, and fourteen additional tables. An edition of the Statutes of the Order of Santiago promulgated by the master, Pelayo Pérez Correa, in 1521 is also included. Summaries in French, Spanish, and English serve as useful guides to the reader. By reassessing this significant period in the life of the military orders, Josserand has placed all of us in his debt and provided a stimulus for further investigation of individual orders and their place in the history of medieval Castile.
