In residence: scientific research
Each year, Casa de Velázquez welcomes around a hundred researchers in the humanities and social sciences through the École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques (EHEHI). These residencies are aimed at a variety of profiles, at different stages of their academic careers - doctorate, post-doctorate and confirmed research - and cover a broad disciplinary spectrum, in line with the Casa's scientific policy, its research priorities and its geographical area of expertise (Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, Maghreb).
Lengths of stay, from a few weeks to several years, meet differentiated scientific objectives and structure a dynamic research community based on dialogue, intellectual emulation and the creation of lasting professional networks.

The Casa de Velázquez scientific community
Each year, sixteen to eighteen post-doctoral researchers make up the "annual promotion" of the École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques - EHEHI.
Appointed for a renewable one-year term, they benefit from long-term in situ research conditions, close scientific support and full involvement in the institution's activities.
Casa de Velázquez works closely with the doctoral schools of French universities to recruit doctoral students on three-year contracts, including periods of residency spread over the duration of the contract. Academic supervision is carried out jointly by EHEHI and the doctoral school to which the student belongs.
Research grant holders are selected on the basis of several annual calls with specific terms and conditions.
Some thirty post-doctoral researchers with international backgrounds and a proven track record are hosted for stays ranging from three months to three years. They are fully integrated into the scientific environment of Casa de Velázquez and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
Every year, around thirty young doctoral researchers receive grants for research stays of one to two months. These grants are designed to promote international mobility and support research requiring a stay in the Iberian Peninsula, mainly at Casa de Velázquez, but also, for a defined number of monthly instalments, at the institution's offices in Lisbon and Barcelona.
Casa de Velázquez also welcomes post-doctoral and senior researchers as part of its own programs to support field research and project development. These short stays (one to two months) are part of the Call for International Mobility (AMI) and the Exceptional Support Scheme (DSE).
Scientific management
Under the direction of Nancy Berthier, Director of Casa de Velázquez, the implementation of scientific policy and the support of researchers in residence are ensured by a dual director of studies: Gwladys Bernard, for the ancient and medieval periods, and Luis González Fernández, for the modern and contemporary periods, the present day and the social sciences.
