Our artist residency programs
Throughout the year, Casa de Velázquez welcomes between 25 and 30 artists as part of the various residency programs offered by the French Academy in Madrid.
Long-term residencies
Each year, Casa de Velázquez welcomes a group of around fifteen artists from a wide variety of disciplines and nationalities. For eleven months, residents are provided with accommodation and dedicated studios, offering them an ideal environment in which to develop their projects, experiment, and further their practice.
These groups bring together both artists in residence at Casa de Velázquez and residents who have been awarded long-term grants in collaboration with several Spanish public institutions. As part of a dynamic artistic program, the artists are supported throughout the year by the team at the French Academy in Madrid, which also sets up post-residency initiatives to support the continuity of their projects and the development of their professional careers.
Artists in residence
Each year, 13 winners are selected following a call for applications open to all artists, regardless of nationality, who can demonstrate significant work. Candidates must submit a project related to the Iberian Peninsula in one of the following disciplines: architecture, visual arts, video art, choreography, cinema, musical composition, and photography.
Applications are submitted in the fall and the final phase takes place in the spring, through an interview at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The application and final interview must be conducted in French, the common language of the selection committee members.
Long-term fellowships
The annual promotion of artists in residence includes four Spanish artists selected for long-term fellowships in collaboration with several public institutions in the country. These four one-year residencies, supported respectively by the Diputación Provincial de Zaragoza and the cities of Málaga, Santander, and Valencia, enable creators from these regions to join the artistic community at Casa de Velázquez. Thanks to these partnerships, the Casa is strengthening its presence throughout Spain and encouraging the circulation of artists, ideas, and practices between different cultural scenes.
Short residencies
Throughout the year, other artists also join the residency for grants lasting several months, as part of partnerships with prestigious French and Spanish cultural entities, both public and private.
These collaborative fellowships enable artists to be hosted for working stays lasting from one to six months. Each partnership has its own specific recruitment conditions.
Artistic doctoral contract for "project-based research"
Given the convergence of their research fields, EUR Arts and Humanities at Université Côte d'Azur and Casa de Velázquez are jointly launching a call for applications for a three-year doctoral contract in research-creation. During this period, the doctoral student will be required to spend a maximum of six months at Casa de Velázquez, either consecutively or separately.
Research-creation explores themes related to artistic production, as well as the links between theory and practice in the artistic field. The notion of creativity[ies] must be at the heart of the selected doctoral project.
Depending on the project, the doctoral thesis in research-creation at EUR Arts and Humanities / Casa de Velázquez may take different forms. A research-creation thesis may consist of several works, a logbook, a more traditional academic text, etc. It is important that the thesis clearly demonstrates the three components of research-creation: artistic or creative practice, the problematization of this practice, and the dissemination of the results.
