Call for applications for doctoral contracts with an international focus at EFE

As part of their support for international cooperation initiatives, the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Network of French Schools Abroad are pleased to announce the opening of the call for applications for doctoral contracts with an international focus at EFEs.

This program is open to any doctoral candidate affiliated with a doctoral school at a French university whose research falls within the scope of the scientific programs of one of the five French schools abroad, for a period of three years.

This year, five doctoral contracts are available, sponsored by the French School in Athens, the French School in Rome, the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology in Cairo, the Casa de Velázquez (School of Hispanic and Iberian Studies), and the French School in the Far East.

Apply to the Casa de Velázquez

The Casa de Velázquez aims to welcome doctoral students preparing a thesis in the disciplinary fields that fall within its sphere of competence as defined in Decree 2011-164 of February 10, 2011, relating to French Schools Abroad. Its mission is to develop research relating to the arts, languages, literature, and societies of the Hispanic and Iberian worlds, the Ibero-American world during the colonial and contemporary periods, and the Maghreb.

The Casa de Velázquez can therefore host, in agreement with the doctoral school of the successful candidate, in September 2025 and for a period of three years, a doctoral student working in one of the institution's disciplinary, geographical, and chronological fields.

Application procedures

Applications must include:

  • A thesis proposal (5 pages max.)
  • A CV of the candidate (3 pages max.)
  • A letter of recommendation from the prospective thesis supervisor(s)
  • The opinion of the director of the doctoral school.

Results will be announced in June.

This grant is in addition to the quota available to each doctoral school: it therefore constitutes both a reinforcement of support for young researchers, support for French research abroad, and an expansion of partnerships between French universities and EFEs.

Furthermore, receiving the grant does not necessarily imply permanent residence in the host country of the school (and is therefore compatible with, for example, teaching hours carried out by the doctoral student at their university).

Apply

Applications must be submitted by May 5, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. (Paris time).

The required documents must be attached in PDF format via the online application form.
