Presentation

Around the East Asian Seas, in an area caught between the Indian Ocean and the
Pacific, a complex and protean process leads to the establishment of a modus vivendi between several regional collectives, communities and powers. The third COMEEAS project workshop aims to study the forms of negotiation of varying intensity, with particular emphasis on ‘low intensity’ or ‘low noise’ or ‘from below’ negotiations between or within communities. The diplomatic relations between the Asian and European powers involved are now well known. We will be looking here at other forms of diplomacy and negotiation involving a wide range of actors (religions, origins, allegiances, languages, activities) in the ‘second tier’: merchants, representatives of trade guilds, community leaders, ‘indigenous’ chiefs, missionaries, intermediary agents of established powers (procuradores), sailors and ship captains, etc.
