Overview:

The Madrid section of the German Archaeological Institute and the Casa de Velázquez are organizing for the ninth time their annual workshop for the fostering / furtherance of doctoral students, thus offering a forum for scientific exchange.
The subject of this year’s meeting deals with necropoleis in areas of contact between different ethnic groups in the Western Mediterranean and adjacent Atlantic rim during the first Millenium B.C.
A main focus will be the analysis of potentially special features of tombs and necropoleis in contact areas. External reasons could be such factors as movements of ethnic groups, migrations,  or colonization. In a larger sense, therefore, the workshop is looking into questions of cultural exchange. The methodology will emphasize interdisciplinary and diachronically based dialogue.

The following aspects might receive special attention:
-    The internal organization of the necropoleis
-    Funerary construction (typology, tombs as territorial markers….)
-    Burial customs (type of burial, ceremonies, participants)
-    Grave embellishments and grave gifts (position in the tomb, meaning of objects)
-    Connection between settlement and necropolis (transitory, permanent)
-    Anthropological data (concerning burial customs, demography, pathology, origin….)

In the first place, scientific and methodological reflections about ancient necropoleis will be made. The target group of the workshop is doctoral students of Pre- and Proto-History, Classical Archaeology, Ancient History and Anthropology at universities and research centers of all of Europe and the Maghreb. Every participant will have the opportunity to actively contribute to the exchange of information by presenting his/her doctoral dissertation, by participating in team work, and by verbalizing their positions in discussion rounds.
The specialists and organizations listed above will tutor the doctoral students throughout the workshop week.
