The workshop will also include visits to the laboratories of the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology (UAM), the facilities of the Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH), the Museum of Human Evolution (MEH) and the UNESCO sites of the Sierra de Atapuerca (Atapuerca Foundation) in Burgos.

PRÉSENTATION

Africa preserves a great diversity of UNESCO palaeoanthropological sequences and sets, fundamental for the understanding of human origin and evolution. For decades, these sites have allowed us to analyse from different perspectives and disciplines the environment and adaptive strategies that have defined our evolutionary success.

Such investigations require the leadership, active participation and full integration of researchers and local communities, which are key to the development of an archaeology developed by and for local institutions.

With this in mind, this workshop, designed from an interdisciplinary perspective, will address key issues such as the promotion of educational programmes and international mobility for researchers, the dissemination of heritage and studies of the past, the creation of accessible collections and analyses, the need for sustainable scientific infrastructures and the different possibilities offered by inclusive science based on the involvement of local communities.

Experts from Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Canada, Israel, Portugal and Spain will meet in this workshop. Through the different international projects and specific case studies, the strategic lines and action programmes required to ensure the necessary decolonisation of palaeoanthropology and archaeology will be designed.
