Presentación

Uno de los principales objetivos de este congreso es el de poner en práctica la necesidad de interrelacionar, y desde una perspectiva crítica, todos los tipos de fuentes disponibles a la hora de abordar el estudio de las denominadas "sociedades bárbaras", sin priorizar o jerarquizar un tipo u otro de registro, particularmente en lo que respecta a la compleja cuestión relacionada con su identidad socio-política. En este sentido, se han puesto ya de manifiesto, en numerosas ocasiones, los límites, conceptuales y metodológicos, de la arqueología para abordar los aspectos relacionados con la identidad a partir del análisis del mundo funerario. Así como la estrecha dependencia del registro arqueológico respecto a las informaciones aportadas por las fuentes narrativas sobre el "mundo bárbaro". Por otra parte, los textos proporcionan una imagen de los "Bárbaros" desde una óptica exclusivamente romana, que obedece a los intereses y estrategias geo-políticas del Imperio romano en la gestión de su relación con las gentes barbarae. A partir de una serie de estudios, efectuados por parte de reconocidos especialistas, sobre diversos ámbitos espaciales europeos, y bajo perspectivas de investigación diversas, pretendemos poner las bases para un diálogo interdisciplinar constructivo sobre uno de los temas claves en el estudio de las sociedades tardo-antiguas y alto-medievales en Europa.
