Investigaciones en curso

Maurizio Isabella se interesa principalmente en investigar la historia intelectual, política y cultural, enfocándose en el Mediterráneo del siglo XIX y en las conexiones e intercambios transnacionales. Su trabajo actual se centra en la historia de las revoluciones de los años 1920 en el sur de Europa, desde una perspectiva global. Su proyecto reexamina los levantamientos en Portugal, España, Italia peninsular, Sicilia y Grecia que tuvieron lugar en los años 1820 con el objetivo de establecer constituciones y consolidar autonomías políticas, y que encontraron sus puntos de partida en revueltas militares.

Se centra en las interconexiones y los intercambios dentro y fuera del Mediterráneo en el momento de las revoluciones -examinando el flujo de los voluntarios, de los viajeros, de la información y de las ideas entre las revoluciones- así como desde Europa del Norte y otros continentes hacia el Mediterráneo. Explora las prácticas e ideas que dieron forma a estas revoluciones y su legado dentro de la región. En particular, evalúa el papel de las sociedades secretas, de las elecciones y de la movilización de guerra, investigando también la circulación de la información y del material impreso como medios para politizar nuevos sectores de la sociedad. Por otra parte, estudia la cultura constitucional y cómo los debates sobre la teoría y la práctica de un gobierno constitucional han ido definiendo el pensamiento revolucionar.

Estas investigaciones ponen así un foco nuevo sobre los orígenes y la naturaleza del primer liberalismo del Sur de Europa, sus particularidades y sus relaciones con los debates fuera de la región. Los ubicará en el contexto de un Sur revolucionario global, extendido desde Latino América y Asia. Subrayando la importancia de esta ola revolucionaria, el proyecto consiste en revisar nuestro entendimiento de la edad de las revoluciones que hasta ahora se ha ceñido casi exclusivamente al Atlántico Norte y Francia, para ayudarnos a reconsiderar los orígenes de la modernidad política en Europa.
