Presentation

The wave of democratization in occidental Europe after the Second World War led to the feeling that democratic political systems had reached a general consensus. After the fall of the Berlin wall and the announce made by Francis Fukuyama that «the end point of mankind's ideological evolution» had arrived, liberal democracy seemed to consolidate globally as the only political way in the long-term. Nevertheless, the raise in many countries, including European, of political systems which have been labelled as «populists», «competitive authoritarianisms» or «iliberal democracies», has shown the persistence of authoritarianisms and their heritages, a key point in understanding the birth of political alternatives of different types.

In the same sense, these last years, works by Pepijn Corduwener, Martin Conway and Jan-Werner Muller among others have revised the construction of the post Second World democratic model, pointing out how the vision of their political elite about what was democracy and how it had to be implemented could be very different across the countries. One of the main political figures of that time, Aldo Moro, declared once that the term "democracy" was a discussed concept that had to be "conquered".

This workshop intends to explore a set of issues about the European post-war political configuration, and to reflect on the roots of the present day, through the analysis of the debates around democracy, the role played by the elections, the social and economic change, the rise of feminism and the place, within society, of the memory of traumatic events. The workshop is organised around conferences in the morning, delivered by recognised specialists, which will deal with these subjects and provide a series of texts to analyse, showing their potential for future research. These conferences will be followed by a debate with all the selected candidates, and practical workshops in the afternoon, led by lecturers and instructors. The workshop is directed to doctoral candidates, master students, researchers and professors (a maximum of 20) wishing to expand their understanding of post-war societies and present political situations.

Debates and interventions must be realized in Spanish, French or English.
