Academic background
Doctorate in social history, Maria Fernanda Bicalho submitted a thesis in 1997 entitled: "The City and Empire: Rio de Janeiro in the colonial dynamic Portuguese in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries" in the University of São Paulo. She later received a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon in 2006-2007.
Between 1998 and 2004 she was elected member of the Academic Committee of Licenciatura in History and an elected member of Council of the Department of History. She was also elected Vice-Director of the Licensing Department of History, Fluminense Federal University between 1998 and 2000.
Current Research
She has participated in numerous research programs of the Federal University Fluminense (Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro): between 2007-2009, "City politics and territories: capitality Rio de Janeiro in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, between 2007 and and 2010, "The Monarchy and its languages: Court, ultramarine governments, traders, regular and slaves in the Portuguese world (sixteenth-nineteenth century).
