Presentation

Since 2006, the topics for the workshop for doctoral students, which the German Archaeological Institute in Madrid (DAI) and Casa de Velázquez (CVZ) have been organising on a regular basis, vary annually. The central theme of the next workshop is nautical and maritime archaeology. It will cover the study of shipwrecks and other archaeological-maritime contexts, as well as questions of economics, urban planning, logistics, technology and even geography and climatology related to maritime archaeology, in addition to the relevant contributions of experimental archaeology.

Geographically, our interest is limited to the central and western Mediterranean, as well as the Atlantic coast of Europe and northwest Africa.

The chronological framework is from the first millennium BC to the 6th century AD.

This workshop is aimed particularly at PhD students in Archaeology, Ancient History, Architecture and Physical and Natural Sciences in relation to the Human Sciences, from universities or research centres throughout Europe and the Maghreb. The aim is to create a space for the exchange of experiences and the analysis of practices and methodologies in the different research traditions.

In this way, each participant will have the opportunity to become actively involved in the exchange of information, presenting their doctoral research topic in relation to the theme of the workshop, and contributing their point of view to the collective reflection.

Leading researchers contribute to the workshop as mentors, representing various disciplines: maritime and nautical archaeology, economy and maritime commerce, underwater archaeology, port archaeology, ancient history and experimental archaeology, bringing their expertise and mastery of their disciplines to the workshop.

Sessions will take place alternately at Casa de Velázquez and German Archaeological Institute.

Mentors

Renowned researchers will participate in the workshop as tutors. These tutors will represent different disciplines: underwater archaeology, maritime and nautical archaeology, maritime economics and trade, port archaeology, ancient history and experimental archaeology, lending their expertise and experiences in their respective fields to the workshop.
