Selection of Artistic Section members
Candidates—plastic artists, architects, musical composers, film-makers, photographers, video artists—must hold a diploma in higher artistic studies or be authors of outstanding works approved by a competent board. Their artistic projects and the works they propose to execute must be presented in precise detail and be such as to warrant a stay in the Iberian Peninsula.
Places are open to all European Union citizens and exceptionally to nationals of other countries. Candidates must be aged less than forty on 1 September of the year in which they are selected. An artistic board first examines the candidates’ dossiers then interviews them in Paris. The result of their deliberations is communicated to the Artistic Board of Casa de Velázquez, which draws up a list to be submitted to the Ministry for appointment.
Members who are civil servants will be placed on secondment and will hold on to their positions in France. During their time at Casa de Velázquez they will receive their gross index-related salary at a level of 590. Non-civil servants will be paid the salary scale for a level I secondary school professor. Members will also receive a residence allowance.
The Artistic Section may also accommodate free members in possession of qualifications equivalent to those required of tenured members or members presenting works approved by the admission board. The conditions of appointment are the same as for the other members but they do not receive a salary or residence allowance.
Members are appointed for a period of one year renewable once, or exceptionally twice if the quality of their work and the interests of the institution so warrant.
